20160525143620345In the afternoon of May 23, Mr. Zhao Hongzhu, Member of Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Deputy Secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Central Committee of the CPC, met with and hosted a banquet for the Kean University delegation led by Dr. Dawood Farahi. Mr. Liu Jianchao, Deputy Director of National Bureau of Corruption Prevention and Director of International Bureau of the Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Central Committee of the CPC, Mr. Liu Jianwei, Vice Governor of Zhejiang Province, Mr. Jin Yonghui, Director of Zhejiang Provincial Department of Foreign Affairs and Overseas Chinese Affairs and Mr. Xie Yuhua, Inspector of General Office of the Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Central Committee of the CPC also attended the meeting. Member of Kean University Board of Trustees and Wenzhou-Kean University Board of Directors Mr. John Kean Jr., Wenzhou-Kean University Chair of Board of Directors Mr. Wang Beijiao and Kean University Executive Vice President Mr. Philip Connelly also attended the meeting. Secretary Zhao expressed appreciation for Dr. Farahi’s contribution to the development of Sino-US cooperative education and sincere hopes to the development of the university and its first cohort of graduates.

 

Secretary Zhao Hongzhu firstly conveyed greetings from President Xi Jinpin. Then he recalled the process of establishing the Wenzhou-Kean University: In May, 2006, President Xi Jinpin attended the signing ceremony of establishing Wenzhou-Kean; in May, 2013, Secretary Zhao met with President Farahi in Beijiang; and this May, President Farahi visits Beijing again. Secretary Zhao noted that what Wenzhou-Kean has achieved demonstrated the good progress of China-US education cooperation. Last September, President Xi recognized Wenzhou-Kean University as “making good progress” in the 3rd China-US Governors Forum. The presidents of China and US met in this March, they put forward strategic and directional instructions for the development of China-US relationship. Wenzhou-Kean University is a project of benefiting the people. It was the vision and strategic decision of President Xi provided a direction and roadmap for the development of the university. However, there are many things we need to do to develop the university well. Wenzhou is in the frontline of China’s reform and opening up, and Kean University is at the forefront of America’s Higher Education. Therefore, Secretary Zhao believed that with the unremitting efforts of China and U.S., Wenzhou-Kean University will have a bright future.

 

Secretary Zhao stressed that Chinese government at all levels have been strongly supporting the development of Wenzhou-Kean University. He recalled the experience of working in Zhejiang and the experience of attending the groundbreaking ceremony of WKU in 2012; he said these memories are unforgettable. He was sincerely happy for what Wenzhou-Kean University has accomplished and will support the development of Wenzhou-Kean University as always. He said that WKU’s establishment, development and the graduation of the first class of 187 students could not have been so successful without the unremitting effort of President Farahi. Secretary Zhao hoped President Farahi could continue his care and support to WKU. Meanwhile, he was glad that the first class of graduates of WKU had been well recognized by the society.

 

President Farahi extended his appreciation for Chinese leaders at all levels who have been supporting the development of Wenzhou-Kean University. To witness the inaugural commencement of WKU, Kean USA sent a 50-people delegation to China. He called Chinese and American students to have more exchange and communication so as to enhance the China-US relationship and cooperation. He expressed his determination of develop Wenzhou-kean to be a top academic institution with the joint efforts of both Chinese and American parties.

 

The joint efforts of both Chinese and American parties have come to fruition. The university currently has a student population of about 1,300 and more than 200 Chinese and foreign faculty and staff, including about 80 foreign faculty. 7 undergraduate programs have been established: Graphic Design, English, Computer Science, Marketing, Finance, Accounting and Global Business. The university adopts small-sized class teaching, and all the classes are instructed in English. The university graduated its first class of 187 students in the end of this May.
