美丽温肯背后的神秘力量

Hi~ friend,

Have you ever seen a university surrounded by mountains and streams?

 If not,

do you know the mysterious power behind the beautiful Wenzhou-Kean University?

嗨~朋友们,有没有见过群山与溪流环绕的大学?

如果没见过的话,

知不知道美丽温肯背后的神秘力量呀?

Located in a valley surrounded by mountains,Wenzhou-Kean University is known locally as “Li ‘ao”,

 Li – Beauty,Ao – Valley.

温州肯恩大学坐落于群山环绕的山谷中。

当地人称此处为“丽岙”。

丽–美丽,岙–山谷。

 The stream flows from the valley to the campus,

 which is brought into the campus by a specially designed artificial river channel,

silently guarding the land.

溪流像一首诗歌从山谷流向校园,

由特别设计的人工河道引入校园,

默默守护着这片土地。

In the dry season,

the campus is lush with vegetation,

 which is blown by the wind and ripple in the river.

旱季时,

校园的植被郁郁葱葱,

在风的吹拂下,

荡漾在温肯的河道中。

During the rainy season,

 the river slowly surrounds the campus,
listening to the nature sound,

like a natural healing song.

雨季时,

河道缓缓地围绕着校园,

听,

那来自自然的声音,

像是一首天然的治愈之歌。

The three Bridges, “I, C, E”, are where the river must pass.
It is colorful

and lights up the campus at night.

ICE三桥是河道必经之地,
绚丽多姿,
点亮温肯校园的夜晚。

Past the “I, C, E” Bridges,
not far from it is the hillside filled with reeds and other perennial herbs.

The foreign teachers’ apartment is just over the hill.

经过ICE三桥,
不远处是满是芦苇等多年生草本植物的山坡,
顺势而上便是外教公寓。

However,
the thing that students most interested in the campus

is the ubiquitous lawn.

然而,
同学们最钟意的,
还是校园里无处不在的大草坪。

The big lawn on the west side of the campus
is planted with a row of sakura flowers.

The bloom and fall are their beautiful destiny.

校园西侧的大草坪,
种植了一排樱花
花开花落便是美的归宿。

In front of the dormitory,

there is also a lawn for students to talk and rest.

在学生宿舍前,
也就有供同学们交流、小憩的草坪。

The lawn in front of the CBPM
is the place where students can read and enjoy their leisure time.

It is also a famous place for a nice shoot.

商学院前的大草坪,
更是读书、休闲、网红打卡之地。

In the future,
surrounded by the big lawn,
the streams in the valley will converge to the central lake through the river,
and the water garden will be integrated

with the traditional garden,

which will surely become

the most beautiful landscapeof the school.

未来,
在大草坪的环绕下,
山谷里的溪流将通过河道汇聚到中央湖,
水上花园与传统园林相互融合,
一定会成为学校最美的景观。

Zhang Xingu, landscape architect. Graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology, USA, with a master’s degree in landscape architecture. Worked in design offices in Chicago, Shanghai and Wenzhou. During three and a half years in Wenzhou-Kean University, she was responsible for campus landscape design and construction management. Designed projects: “I C E” Bridges, CBPM West Garden, Riverside Landscape of Wenzhou Road, Entrance Garden of GEH, Farahi Garden, Street Garden of Wenzhou Road and Jersey Road. The projects involved modification and construction: School of Architecture and Design, Second Phase of Student Dormitory, Faculty Housing, Central Lake, Canal Landscape, Athletic Field, Campus Planning in District II, etc.

张心谷,景观设计师。毕业于美国伊利诺伊理工大学,景观建筑硕士。曾就职于芝加哥、上海、温州的设计事务所。在温州肯恩大学三年半时间里,负责校园景观设计与施工管理。设计的项目:”I C E ”桥、商学院西侧景观、温州路河岸景观、教学楼入口花园、法拉希花园、温州路与泽西路街头花园。参与方案修改与施工的项目:建筑与设计学院、二区学生宿舍、外教公寓、中心湖、水渠景观、田径场、二区校园规划等。

Q1.What is the meaning of the three bridges “ICE”?

那ICE三座桥代表什么寓意呢?

A1:Hi, I am Xingu.If you look down from the top of the three bridges, you will find that the shapes of the bridges are “I, C, E”, which represents Wenzhou-Kean University’s School Motto “innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship”.

A1:如果你从三座桥的正上方往下看,会发现桥的形状就是“I,C,E”,这也代表了温肯师生秉承的校训,分别是“Innovation创新, Creativity创造, Entrepreneurship企业家精神”。

 

Q2:The river channel and the central lake complement each other ingeniously. The whole water cycle respects the ecology of the original landscape. How does the school achieve the ecological strategy of the “sponge campus”?

河道和中心湖的相辅相成十分巧妙,整个水循环尊重原始地貌的生态,学校是怎样实现“海绵校园”的生态策略的呢?

 

A2:The five core steps of the “sponge campus” strategy are: storage,infiltration, retention, purification, and usage, which is to consider rainwater collection, infiltration, water circulation and other principles toconnect each landscape space into a comprehensive network. The central lake isthe lowest place in the original site. Using lake to accumulates rainwater, and finally the excess water flows into the Litang River.

“海绵校园”策略,核心的五个步骤是–蓄渗滞净用,是尊重雨水收集、渗透净化、水循环等原则,将各个景观空间连接成一个综合网络。中心湖就是原始地貌中地势最低的地方,由中心湖蓄积雨水,最终多余的水流入丽塘河。

 

Q3:In the choice of vegetation, different from traditional Chinese types, many perennial herbs are planted in the teachers’apartment. What are the trade-offs made by Ms. Xingu in balancing the cultural differences between China and the United States?

在植被的选择上,不同于传统园林,教师公寓种植了很多多年生草本植物,心谷老师在平衡中美文化差异上做了哪些取舍?

A3:

1. A large number of perennial grasses planted in the field, such like Pampas grasses, Miscanthus, Pennisetum, Iris, Verbena, Mexican feather grass. The maintenance costs really low, and workers rarely water them, but they are still alive. Because they are resistant to drought and humidity that can grow in harsh environments.

2. Because most of our faculties are from the United States, even though they are not Americans, they have studied in the United States for several years. In fact, this familiar landscape environment makes them feel at home. So, a lot of Miscanthus plants are used in the faculty housing.

1. 场地里大量种上了多年生草本,蒲苇、细叶芒、狼尾草、鸢尾、马鞭草、墨西哥羽毛草等,维护成本非常低,基本不需要工人来浇水,植物依然成活。因为它们既耐旱也耐湿,能在恶劣环境生长。

2. 因为我们的外教大部分来自美国,即使不是美国人,他们也曾在美国求学过。其实这种熟悉的景观环境能让他们有家的感觉。所以在外教公寓大量使用这类芒草植物。

 

Q4:I heard that the lawn on the west side of the CBPM is the designed jointly by Professor Vincent from the Michael Graves Collage and Ms. Xingu. Could you share us with the designing concept?

听说商学院西侧草坪是心谷老师与来自建筑与设计学院的Vincent教授共同设计的景观,能谈谈设计理念吗?

A4:The west lawn of the Business School is inspired by the landscape of Maison Louis Carre designed by Alvar Aalto. The lawn is designed according to the original landform, which minimizes the transfer of earthwork. Corten-steel and concrete retaining walls are used to create terraced landscape, and the mountain scenery surrounding the campus is used to integrate man-made landscape with the nature. A trail of Yoshino cherry trees brings a romantic atmosphere to the large lawn.

商学院西侧草坪灵感来源于阿尔瓦·阿尔托(Alvar Aalto)设计的路易卡尔别墅景观(Maison Louis Carre)。根据原始地貌设计的草坪,最大程度减少土方转运。分别用耐候钢板与混凝土挡土墙来营造台地景观,借用校园环绕的山景,将人造景观与自然环境融为一体。一排染井吉野樱花给大草坪带来了浪漫的气息。

Hello everyone, I am Xiong Siqi, a sophomore student from the Department of Architecture of Wenzhou-Kean University.
