M.S. Biotechnology Science

Program Description

Wenzhou-Kean University’s Biotechnology Science (M.S.) program is committed to helping students master the latest high-tech skills through course learning and laboratory experiences. Our program allows students to concentrate their studies in the three rapidly advancing sectors of biotechnology and pharmaceutical sciences. The courses of the program include Molecular Cell Biology, Biostatistics and Computational Analysis, Scientific Writing and Presentation, Advanced Cell Biology, Ethics in Biotechnology, Molecular Cellular Techniques, Pharmacology, Instrumental Analysis, Advanced Systems Biology, Medicinal Chemistry, Applied Human Immunology, Molecular Biology of Cancer, Advanced Molecular Cell Technology, Introduction to Bioinformatics, Database systems, etc. Graduates become proficient in state-of-the-art technologies and are prepared to seek employment/advancement in biotech/pharma or to continue their graduate study toward the Ph.D. degree.

Admission Requirements

1. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university

*Applicants, if not graduated from U.S. institutions, must submit a course-by-course evaluation of their official university transcript by National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES) (http://www.naces.org), such as the International Education Evaluation (IEE) or World Education Services (WES) (need to choose course-by-course evaluation).

2. Official transcripts from all institutions attended, 3.0 cumulative grade point average (lower GPAs will be considered based on overall strength of application), 3.0 minimum GPA in all science and math courses
3. Two letters of recommendation
4. Professional résumé/CV
5. Personal statement
6. Official TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score reports of test taken within the past two years of application

*TOEFL iBT / TOEFL at home: 79, paper-based: 550; IELTS: 6.5; Duolingo English Test: 105

7. Optional, not required: GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) scores
8. Optional, not required: DAT (Dental Admissions Test)
9. Departmental interview may be required

Curriculum

*Students holding degrees in disciplines other than biology or chemistry are encouraged to apply with the understanding that they may be required to successfully complete the undergraduate prerequisites before becoming fully matriculated in the M.S. in Biotechnology Science program. The prerequisites are: college biology including either cell biology or biochemistry or equivalent, college chemistry, and college mathematics.

After a graduate student attempts six (6) total graduate credits as a matriculated student, a 3.0 cumulative GPA must be achieved. Failure to meet this minimum may result in the student being placed on Academic Probation. Upon completion of twelve (12) attempted graduate credits, if a student fails to achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.0, the student may be academically dismissed from the University at the discretion of the program/department. If a student who is on Academic Probation achieves a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, they will be removed from Academic Probation. However, if at any time during subsequent semesters the student falls below a cumulative 3.0 GPA, they will be academically dismissed from the University.

Graduation Requirements

Students will be conferred the Biotechnology Science (M.S.) degree of Kean University if they complete 34 credits (with GPA no less than 3.0) culminating in a written research project and presentation of research in a public forum.
