Start Year Restriction Information
Explanation of Start Year Designation
Some course sections are restricted to students who started in a particular year; for this purpose, all undergraduate students are given a start year code within the registration system based on their start year/admitted year. The start year code is named following the format of ‘xx to xx Year Student Designation’.
Please note that the start year code will be refreshed annually, with effects beginning with the fall courses.
Here is an example of how the designation works:
If the course has a start year restriction, as determined by the college, then only the students who are assigned the corresponding start year code are eligible to register for the course in Self-Service (Student Planning). Students without the corresponding start year code will be restricted from self-registration through Self-Service (Student Planning). The table below lists the course registration eligibility of different student groups.
The designation only serves for course section restriction purposes. You can view your designation in the upper right corner of Self-Service (Student Planning). If you have taken a prolonged Leave of Absence and believe that the designation will disrupt your actual four-year plan, please contact the Office of the Registrar prior to the opening of registration for consideration of whether a one-time and irreversible adjustment to a later start year is appropriate.
